Although jigsaw puzzles were being imported into America by 1820, U.S. puzzle production probably started about mid 19th century in Boston and Philadelphia. Thomas Wagner worked in Philadelphia circa 1850s - 1860s. It is just my guess that this is one of his earlier works. There are two sets of double-sided blocks, making four puzzles, in this box. He re-used these prints in other sets and according to Anne Williams, other manufacturers at the time also used the same prints. I have not yet cleaned the puzzles, if you look at the wood on the bottom edge of the box and compare it with the top edge, you can get an idea of how much dirt came off of the box lid.
